Tax Exemption

History of Tax Exemption Creation

In 1992, Florida voters passed a Constitutional amendment that allowed local governments the option of offering ad valorem tax exemptions on improvements to historic properties. The purpose was to stimulate revitalization of historic properties and to ease the burden of maintaining these properties.

Vero Beach Authorization

The City of Vero Beach City Council is authorized to allow ad valorem tax exemptions for the restoration, renovation, or rehabilitation of historic properties.

Development Approval & Certificate of Appropriateness

The exemption only applies to improvements to real property and only to taxes levied by the city council. Development approval and a Certificate of Appropriateness are required prior to applying for this tax incentive.
